A Little Bit Dopamine, A Little Bit Conversation

By Duy Doan

Even the teensiest of curtsies
will make your shadow go away.

If you envision tucking your chin
down, but actually don’t, the door
will swell beyond the height
of its frame

even when you’re telling it
not to do so, and
even if you rebuke it
for paralyzing you while
you sleep—

I think I may have
heard someone argue this
unsuccessfully once, though
I don’t know how come.

My body wants to find stasis.
But it only wants to remember
that it should want to, when some

be so.

Everyone here could be an

addict of the injectables

industry if they wanted to be.

Even the sunshine, when it goes,
it goes hand in hand with you.
Everyone here says this moonshine
tastes like moonshine if moonshine
had cough syrup in it. And that’s
what I think, too. You’re like a vine,
you keep repeating.

I can’t foresee the changes and I can’t know what I will, undoubtedly, regret, but I can come to see me as a future, you as a violent past.
